When you are on a long cycling tour, sharing the roads with motor vehicles it won't take long and you'll notice that funny smell for the first time. A bit further along the road you pass the source of that odour: some poor critter rotting away on the tarmac. It's guts spilled into the ditch, it's eyes wide open, staring into nowhere, buzzing with flies. A smear of blood a couple of meters long leading to it. It's ugly, it's repulsive - and it's everywhere. I had days on my trip counting more than a hundred (100!!!) dead animals on the road. And I wasn't even counting the crosses at the side of the road set up for human traffic victims. In some countries these were very elaborate, with portraits of the dead carved into marble tombstones - and very many. The carwreck on this page was one in Serbia. Right next to it were 4 crosses and pictures of the young men that died in it. While I was on tour I received news that one of my old school friends had a car accident and was lying in a coma for weeks already, uncertain to ever wake up again.
I hate cars. I despise the predominant attitude towards them. I loathe the car culture.
